Step-by-Step Guide: ACWA Assessment & Membership Process

Step 1: Determine Your Purpose

Decide what you need from ACWA:

  • Skills Assessment for Migration (for occupations like Welfare Worker or Community Worker under ANZSCO)

  • Professional Membership (for credibility and networking)

  • Course Accreditation (for education providers)

If you are applying for skilled migration (e.g., subclass 189/190/491), you need a Skills Assessment.

Step 2: Check Eligibility Criteria

For a positive Skills Assessment, you must have:

  • A relevant qualification (e.g., Diploma, Bachelor in Community Services, Social Work, Welfare, Human Services)

  • A minimum of fieldwork placement (usually 400 hours of supervised work-based training)

  • English proficiency (IELTS, PTE, or other accepted tests unless you studied in English)

ACWA does NOT accept RPL-based qualifications unless there’s sufficient supervised fieldwork involved.

Step 3: Prepare Your Documents

Key documents include:

  • Passport & Identification

  • Academic Transcripts & Certificate(s)

  • Course curriculum or syllabus

  • Proof of supervised fieldwork (letters from your education provider or placement host)

  • Resume (detailing community work-related duties)

  • Employment references (if applicable)

  • English Language Test Results (IELTS 6.5 average or equivalent if required)

Step 4: Create an ACWA Online Account

Visit: https://www.acwa.org.au

  • Register on the ACWA portal

  • Select the appropriate assessment or membership application type

Step 5: Submit Your Application Online

  • Upload all documents in the required format (PDF preferred)

  • Pay the required assessment fee (approximately AUD $880 for migration skills assessment – check current rates)

Step 6: Wait for Assessment

Processing time:

  • Usually takes 12–16 weeks for migration skills assessments

  • ACWA may request additional documents or clarifications

Step 7: Receive Outcome Letter

  • Positive Assessment: You’ll receive a letter confirming your qualification and/or experience meet the standards

  • Negative Assessment: You’ll be provided with reasons and may be given an opportunity to review or appeal

Step 8: Apply for Migration (If applicable)

If your purpose is skilled migration:

  • Use the positive assessment letter to submit an EOI (Expression of Interest) via SkillSelect

  • Proceed with visa application once invited
