Skills Assessment Requirement:

To apply for the relevant visas, it is generally required to have a positive Skills Assessment. For Meat Inspectors, the skills assessment authority is Vocational Education and Training Assess (VETASSESS). To obtain a positive skills assessment, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Qualification assessed at AQF Diploma level with a highly relevant field of study AND at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the past five years; OR

  2. Qualification assessed at AQF Diploma level with an additional qualification at AQF Certificate IV in a highly relevant field of study AND at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the past five years; OR

  3. Qualification assessed at AQF Diploma without a highly relevant field of study AND at least two years of post-qualification highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level in the past five years.

Applicants must meet both the qualification and employment requirements to obtain a positive skills assessment. Pre-qualification experience may also be considered if it meets certain requirements, including three years of relevant pre-qualification employment and one year of highly relevant employment within the past five years.

Description:

Primary Products Inspectors inspect animals, plants, agricultural produce, and facilities to ensure compliance with government and industry standards regarding quality, health, and licensing.

Tasks may include:

  • Inspecting animals, plants, and agricultural produce to identify product quality issues and providing advice to producers.
  • Auditing and monitoring quality procedures at farms and food handling and processing facilities to ensure compliance with required standards.
  • Testing samples of produce for quality, size, and purity.
  • Ensuring compliance with hygiene standards at storage, processing, and packing facilities, as well as in transport vehicles.
  • Advising primary producers on economic aspects of disease eradication and informing them of health implications related to diseases and impurities.
  • Providing advice on pest and disease identification and regulations related to grading, packing, and loading of products.
  • Examining imported plants, animals, and products, and arranging quarantine procedures.
  • Patrolling and investigating waterways for unlawful fishing activities and the removal of protected marine life.
  • Educating, advising, and providing information on a wide range of topics related to fish and their protection.
  • Initiating or assisting in legal action to enforce regulations.

Skill Level:

In Australia and New Zealand, most occupations in this group have a skill level commensurate with the following qualifications and experience:

Australia (ANZSCO Skill Level 2):

  • AQF Associate Degree
  • AQF Advanced Diploma
  • AQF Diploma

New Zealand (ANZSCO Skill Level 2):

  • NSQF Diploma
