Chef Skills Assessment Process – Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Check Eligibility
Before applying, ensure you meet the basic eligibility requirements:
-
At least 3 years of relevant full-time work experience as a Chef (paid experience).
-
If you hold a formal qualification, only 2 years of work experience is required.
-
Experience must be within the last 5 years.
Step 2: Gather Required Documents
Prepare the following evidence:
-
Passport (bio page)
-
CV/Resume
-
Work references (on company letterhead with duties and dates)
-
Payslips, tax documents, or bank statements (to prove paid employment)
-
Photos/videos of you cooking in a commercial kitchen
-
Qualifications (if any): transcripts + certificates
Step 3: Document Review & Preparation (RPL)
If you don’t have a formal qualification:
-
An RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) process is required.
-
A registered RTO (partnered with your agent/consultant) will review your documents.
-
You’ll need to complete a self-assessment kit and provide evidence of practical skills.
Step 4: Technical Interview (Stage 1 – Documentary Evidence Review)
This is conducted by Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) through their approved RTO partner:
-
A qualified assessor will review your documents.
-
You may be asked to clarify or provide additional evidence.
Step 5: Practical Demonstration / Technical Interview (Stage 2 – Skills Assessment)
Once Stage 1 is successful, you’ll move to Stage 2:
-
A technical interview (typically via video call) with a qualified assessor.
-
You may be asked questions about:
-
Food safety & hygiene
-
Commercial cooking techniques
-
Menu planning
-
Kitchen tools & equipment
-
Workplace safety (OH&S)
-
Note: No cooking is required on the spot, but you must talk through your processes clearly.
Step 6: Receive Outcome Letter
If successful, you will receive:
-
A Skills Assessment Outcome Letter from TRA, which is:
-
Valid for migration purposes (e.g., skilled visa applications)
-
Recognised by the Department of Home Affairs
-
Step 7: Use the Result for Visa Application
-
Submit your positive outcome letter as part of your visa process (subclass 482, 186, 190, or 491).
-
Ensure all supporting documents are consistent with your visa application.
Tips for Success:
-
Be honest and consistent with your documents.
-
Use a registered migration agent or RPL consultant to avoid delays.
-
Be ready to explain your duties clearly during the interview.
