STEP-BY-STEP: ENGINEER SKILLS ASSESSMENT (Engineers Australia)

Step 1: Determine Your Occupational Category

Decide which of the four engineering occupations your background aligns with:

  • Professional Engineer

  • Engineering Technologist

  • Engineering Associate

  • Engineering Manager (assessed by other authorities, e.g., AIM)

Step 2: Choose the Right Assessment Pathway

There are 4 pathways to choose from, depending on your qualifications:

  1. Accredited Qualifications Pathway
(For those with qualifications accredited under the Washington, Sydney, or Dublin Accords.)

  2. Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) Pathway
(For applicants with non-accredited or overseas qualifications.)

  3. Australian Qualifications Pathway
(For degrees from accredited Australian universities.)

  4. Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) Pathway
(For professionals from countries with MRA agreements with Australia.)

Step 3: Collect Required Documents

Prepare the necessary documents, which generally include:

  • Passport bio page

  • Formal academic qualifications (degrees, transcripts)

  • Employment evidence (if claiming skilled experience)

  • English language proficiency test results (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE)

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)

  • CDR (if applicable – includes Career Episodes, Summary Statement, and CPD)

Step 4: Prepare the Competency Demonstration Report (if using CDR Pathway)

Includes:

  1. Three Career Episodes – Narratives of your engineering experience.

  2. Summary Statement – Matches your experience to EA’s competency elements.

  3. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) – List of your learning activities.

Step 5: Create an EA Portal Account

Step 6: Lodge Your Application

  • Fill in personal and qualification details

  • Upload all required documents

  • Pay the assessment fee (varies by pathway and urgency)

Step 7: Wait for Outcome

  • Standard processing time: 8 to 12 weeks (may vary)

  • You may receive requests for further documents or clarification.

Step 8: Receive Assessment Outcome

You will receive:

  • A formal letter stating whether your skills have been assessed as suitable or not for migration purposes.

  • If successful, this document is used in your Skilled Migration Visa (subclass 189, 190, or 491) application.

 Optional: Claiming Work Experience Points?

If you are claiming points for work experience, EA may perform an Employment Assessment (optional service).
